FOOD : Afternoon Tea at One Devonshire Gardens, Hotel Du Vin, Glasgow

Having driven past One Devonshire Gardens many times over the years, it was lovely to actually be visiting and what an occasion for it, we were trying out the very elegant Champagne Afternoon Tea.

One Devonshire Gardens belongs to the Hotel Du Vin group and is located in Glasgow West End. The location is very West End, a tree-lined Victorian terrace well hidden from Great Western Road. Conifers also denote the various entrances to the hotel - restaurant and bar, reception and function room and no doubt make for a gorgeous setting come Christmas.

It’s pretty, its immaculate but very relaxed.

REVIEW OF THE CHAMPAGNE AFTERNOON TEA AT ONE DEVONSHIRE GARDENS, HOTEL DU VIN, GLASGOW

We were sat in the bar area by the large bay window. Filled with soft seating, leather armchairs and cozy nooks, this bar is just a superb space to kick back and chill. Beautiful chandeliers hang from the ceiling and I can imagine how snug this would be in winter with the fire roaring away.

Luckily, on our visit the weather was warm, with plenty of sunshine streaming in.

Afternoon Tea was delivered on a proper Afternoon Tea stand with three plates laden with goodies. Our champagne was poured and we decided to also have a good ol cuppa tea - cause Afternoon Tea isnt Afternoon Tea without the tea!

Top layer of savoury yumminess consisted of:

Bacon and cheese quiche. The pastry made this - it was so light and delicate, but short and buttery. Superb!
Cheese and Chutney sandwiches. Great.
Ham sandwiches. Lovely
Salmon and Cucumber. Nice.

Middle layer of scrumptiousness consisted of:

Two plain scones
Two fruit scones which I think was cranberry
A dish of fresh raspberries and clotted cream

Seriously fabulous scones. They broke in half easily without crumbling, and were just the perfect carrier for all that glorious clotted cream and strawberry jam.

Bottom layer of delightfulness consisted of:

Chocolate cupcakes
Carrot cupcakes
Chocolate Delice
Lemon tarts

We were torn on our favourites here. Mine was the Lemon Tart which was extremely lemon, full of acidity and little sweetness to balance it, but I rather liked it. And Carmin’s favourite was the Carrot Cake although favoured the icing more than the cake.

The staff were great, you didn’t really see them but they always seemed to be there when you needed them, which was great. The bar wasn’t busy and at some time throughout our visit we were the only ones in the bar, but the ambience was lovely with subtle music in the background. The Afternoon Tea was too indulgent and distracting to notice anything else really - which I think is what you want from a great Afternoon Tea.

I drove through from Glasgow which depending on traffic should take you over an hour to get there, and there is parking right outside the hotel which costs less than a £1 for an hour. It really is a wonderful treat and I highly recommend it.

Afternoon Tea costs £30pp and the Champagne Afternoon Tea is £35pp. Afternoon Tea is only served on Fridays and Saturday from 1230pm-330pm.

They can cater for dietary requirements, but you will need to give them at least 24hours notice.
