Weekly Wrap - August No 1

BIG BURRITO

Aberdeen has re-entered lockdown with all pubs and restaurants closed from 5pm on Wednesday. I hope the restrictions get lifted again soon.

Eat Out to Help Out is still running until 31st August. On a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, you can get 50% off your bill (for food and non-alcoholic drinks only) to the maximum of £10 per person.

There are loads of businesses taking part in this scheme and it’s one of the easiest and tastiest ways to help our hospitality industry. What an awesome excuse to eat out 3 nights a week!

I have started to list as many Edinburgh and surrounding areas that are participating in this in, my Instagram Highlights www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/17860889159041867/ - I’m adding more each day but use this government link to find a range of participating businesses in your area. Just pop in your postcode and make a booking.

TARTANSPOON WEEKLY WRAP - NEWS FOR YOU TO DIGEST

FOOD

The Kitchin, Edinburgh - I recently dined out at the Kitchin. The souffle was like eating flavoured air; so light you could have drifted off on a souffle cloud and just lay there in bliss all afternoon. Read my review here

White Horse at Home, Edinburgh - This At Home box is most definitely made for 100% Seafood Lovers and if you need simply wonderful food for a special occasion and want to impress, then order it. Read my review here

Urban Fox, Edinburgh - has had a re-vamp. Comfy seats, distanced tables, a brand new bar, AND a re-vamped menu. Their Urban classics will still feature, but they’ve added some great new dishes. I’m off to review them next week, so will let you know how I get on.

111 By Modou, Glasgow - Gutted to be missing the launch but Chef Modou Diagne will open his debut restaurant, 111 by Modou, located at 111 Cleveden Road in Glasgow's West End with a five course tasting menu that will showcase his stylish and experimental culinary skills. On offer will be a seasonal tasting menu priced at £30 per person with a matching wine flight at £25 per person and available every Tuesday - Saturday. The menu is an immersive experience where guests create their own food journey with a choice of ingredients for each of the five courses.

Harmonium, Edinburgh - The vegan food mecca, has a new home. They won’t be reopening on Henderson Street in Leith but instead in a more central location on East London Street, just opposite The Ox. Good luck in your new location.

Superico - an amalgamation of what once was 99 Hanover Street Bar and 83 Hanover Street Restaurant is now Superico. Superico Bar and Lounge at 99 and Superico Restaurant at 83. It is the latest venture from Juan José Castillo Castro owner of both premises. I can’t wait to have a look inside.

Epicure and Cail Bruich, Glasgow - Epicures have teamed up with the incredible 3 AA Rosette-awarded team and west-end favourite Cail Bruich to launch epicures by Cail Bruich. A dedicated bakery, brunch classics and epicurean feasts and drinks; all with the team's signature modern Scottish twist. Bookings go live on Monday 10th August. Best of luck with the new venture.

Stair Arms Hotel, Pathhead - a few weeks ago I let you know about this genius move by the Stair Arms Hotel to see them through the lockdown. They converted a container into a drive-thru takeaway and have now branched out to drive-thru Afternoon Teas. I went along to the Drive-thru and picked up my Afternoon Tea. Two boxes full of treats start at £13.50 depending on what you order.

Sugo, Glasgow - is set to expand. They have submitted plans for expansion to Glasgow Council and hope to expand their premises to include the basement of their current location on Mitchell Street. This will allow them to increase capacity but safely and help them recover from Covid.

Appetite Events, Edinburgh - it was with great sadness that I read they Appetite Events are entering administration. They provided one of the BEST At Home Boxes during lockdown but unfortunately, they just couldn’t recover the financial loss. They will be sorely missed.

Woodland Creatures, Edinburgh - have been awarded the Tripadvisor 2020 Travellers Choice Award. Congrats and keep up the good work! Get the mac n cheese on.

Edinburgh St James, Edinburgh - will soon be home to a whole new foodhall called Bonnie and Wild. Scottish restaurant brand, Mac and Wild, will be managing this space. Expect Scottish restaurant operators alongside fresh and packaged food and drink from a variety of artisan butchers, fishmongers, grocers, cheesemongers, chocolatiers and bakeries.

PRODUCTS

Ceylon 35 - some of the best Sri Lankan spices you can find in Scotland. Read more about them here

Spiral Tide Pottery - Avesha makes some of the most beautiful sea inspired pottery. She is based out in Cockenzie in East Lothian and I’ve fallen in love with this goodie jar (click here). When I move into a house with a massive kitchen, I want all my crockery from Avesha. Have a look at her work here
