FOOD : To Mouragio - A Culinary Journey in Kiato
Nestled along the picturesque Corinthian Gulf, Kiato is a coastal town that beckons holiday makers seeking tranquility and natural beauty. With its pristine beaches, warm hospitality, and delicious seafood, Kiato offers an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of larger tourist destinations.
Kiato boasts crystal-clear waters that shimmer under the Mediterranean sun. Whether you’re swimming, snorkelling, or simply gazing out at the horizon, the views are nothing short of spectacular. The surrounding mountains add to the enchantment, creating a serene backdrop for your coastal retreat.
Take leisurely strolls along Kiato’s charming promenade. Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin as you explore the waterfront. Stop by the small shops selling handmade crafts, and perhaps pick up a souvenir to remember your visit.
Unlike bustling Athens, Kiato offers a peaceful respite. Imagine lying on the beach, listening to the gentle lapping of waves, and feeling the sand between your toes. It’s the perfect antidote to stress and a chance to recharge your batteries.
Foodies rejoice too! Kiato is renowned for its fresh seafood and traditional Greek cuisine. Head to the local restaurants to savour grilled octopus, tzatziki, and moussaka like To Mouragio!
Kiato is approximately 1.5 hours from Athens city centre by car. The drive itself is part of the adventure, as you leave behind the urban sprawl and embrace the coastal road. Plan for about 45 minutes to get out of Athens, and soon you’ll find yourself in Kiato’s welcoming embrace.

When it comes to authentic Greek dining, To Mouragio stands out as a culinary haven in Kiato. From succulent grilled octopus to refreshing Greek salads, this restaurant captures the essence of Mediterranean flavours. Let’s dive into the delightful dishes that I tried at To Mouragio.
1. Greek Salad (£6.75)
No Greek meal is complete without a vibrant Greek salad. To Mouragio’s version combines juicy tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, tangy feta cheese, local olives, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. It’s a refreshing symphony of flavours that transports you straight to the sun-kissed shores of Greece.
2. Grilled Octopus (£11.39)
Prepare your taste buds for a treat! To Mouragio’s grilled octopus is succulent, tender, and bursting with sea-inspired goodness. The smoky char from the grill enhances its natural flavours, making it a must-try dish for seafood enthusiasts.
3. Boiled Greens (£4.22)
On a scorching hot day, nothing beats the simplicity of boiled greens. To Mouragio’s greens are cooked to perfection—lightly seasoned and served as a wholesome side. They’re a refreshing choice that pairs well with any main course.
4. Marinated Anchovies (£5.06)
While marinated anchovies might not be everyone’s cup of tea, To Mouragio’s version deserves a second look. Freshness is key here, and these little fish are well-prepared, offering a briny and savoury experience. Adventurous eaters won’t be disappointed.
5. Grilled Beef Steak (£9.50)
In Greece, steaks are typically cooked well done unless otherwise specified. To Mouragio’s grilled beef steak, despite being well done, surprised with its tenderness. Each bite was a testament to the chef’s skill in preserving juiciness and flavour.
6. Fried Cheese Pie with Honey and Sesame (£5.90)
Imagine a giant samosa filled with creamy cheese and drizzled with golden honey. That’s To Mouragio’s fried cheese pie. The contrast of crispy pastry, rich cheese, and sweet sesame-infused honey creates a symphony of taste. It’s a delightful treat that leaves you craving more.
7. Hotcheese (£3.80)
A must-have for cheese enthusiasts, the aptly named “Hotcheese” is a sensation. Whether it’s gooey, melted, or slightly charred, this dish celebrates the magic of cheese. Pair it with a glass of wine, and you’re in for a cosy culinary experience.
8. Grilled Shrimps (£46.30 per kilo)
To Mouragio’s grilled shrimps are a revelation. Succulent, perfectly seasoned, and bursting with flavour, they’re a true highlight. Whether you’re dining by the harbour or in the restaurant, these shrimps are a must-order item. Prepare to be transported to the Mediterranean coast with every bite.
To Mouragio’s secret lies in its simplicity. The chefs know precisely what works well together—the freshest ingredients, thoughtful seasoning, and a genuine love for Greek cuisine.
