AFTERNOON TEA AT THE LUXURIOUS ARCHERFIELD IN EAST LOTHIAN

We visited Archerfield to indulge in their afternoon tea at Archerfield Clubhouse - a delightful experience that exudes elegance and comfort. Set within the serene surroundings of this sprawling estate, the Clubhouse is an oasis of tranquillity, offering a perfect blend of contemporary style and traditional charm.

The clubhouse serves as the welcoming hub for guests staying in the estate's luxurious lodges. Upon arrival, guests can check in at the reception area, explore the well-stocked golf shop, and relax in the comfortable lounge. The highlight of the clubhouse is undoubtedly the Clubhouse Restaurant, which proudly showcases the finest ingredients from Scotland's renowned larder. The menu features an array of seasonal and locally-sourced delights, including smoked salmon and cheddar from Belhaven Smokehouse in Dunbar, freshly caught crab from Belhaven Lobster, and succulent pork belly from the nearby Brands Family Farm. In addition to offering delectable lunches and dinners, the Clubhouse Restaurant is also the place where guests staying at Archerfield can enjoy a sumptuous breakfast each morning. But we where here for the Afternoon Tea. Each person dining for Afternoon Tea, is provided with their own Afternoon tea tiered stand featuring an array of delicate finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with local butter, clotted cream and jam, and an assortment of exquisite cakes and savouries.

We were comfortably seated in a delightful booth featuring a grand, round table that promised an intimate yet spacious setting. The table itself was a vision of elegance, adorned with a crisp white tablecloth, fresh flowers, and gleaming tableware. The friendly staff welcomed us warmly and swiftly took our drinks order, a blend of aromatic coffee and an assortment of fine teas.

As we settled in, anticipation built for the afternoon tea. Soon enough, the pastry chef arrived, presenting our tiered stands with an air of pride and expertise. Each tier was laden with an array of meticulously crafted treats, and the chef took the time to explain every delightful morsel, from the delicate cakes to the savoury finger sandwiches. Her detailed descriptions only heightened our eagerness, and we found ourselves practically salivating, ready to indulge in the culinary delights before us.

The cake tier was most impressive with three large cakes awaiting to be tasted.

Dark Chocolate Mousse - Coffee Crémeux, Roasted Coco Nib Feuillentine

White Chocolate & Calvados Mousse - Carmel Apple, Croustillant

Quinoa, Carrot & Walnut Cake - Clementine & Carrot Jam, Creamed Goat’s Cheese Ganache

Scones obviously, but the savouries were exceptional too :

Sandwiches of Egg Mayonnaise and Watercress; Honey Roast Ham and Arran Mustard Butter and a Red Pepper and Pesto (which was swopped out in place of the Oak Smoked Salmon, Garden Herbs, Lemon, Creamed Cheese Sandwich).

Haggis Scotch Quail’s Egg and Aioli

Woodland Mushroom, Feta & Winter Truffle Dartoise

If I were to offer a small critique, and it's really just down to personal preference, it would be that there was only one scone per person. The scone itself was absolutely superb—fluffy, warm, and full of flavour—but an extra one would have been a delightful addition. Additionally, the sandwiches were served very cold. While still delicious, I think they could have benefited from being served at room temperature to allow the flavours to be more pronounced. Despite these minor points, the overall experience was delightful and didn't detract from the wonderful afternoon tea we enjoyed.

I am a devoted enthusiast of afternoon tea. It's such a delightful indulgence that can be enjoyed with family or friends, creating lasting memories over exquisite treats. Archerfield's afternoon tea experience is undoubtedly among the finest I've had the pleasure of experiencing. Every element, from the delicate cakes to the savoury sandwiches, is crafted to perfection, making it a truly memorable affair. And at just £28.50 per person, it feels like an absolute steal for such a luxurious experience. So if you're looking to treat yourself, Archerfield's afternoon tea is a must-try! You won't be disappointed.

I was invited by Archerfield House to review their menu. Food and drink were complimentary but the views are very much my own.
