DRINK : Where Science & Gin meet - The Gin Laboratory, Kinross

In the quaint town of Kinross, a throughfare leads to the Curling Club. Flanked by small business offices and workshops, one of these spaces is home to Kenneth from the Gin Laboratory. Though his background is in marketing, Kenny has transformed into a Gin Scientist, pushing the boundaries of gin education.

The Gin Laboratory truly lives up to its name—a fully operational laboratory brimming with stills, potions, vials, tinctures, cabinets filled with herbs, spices, botanicals, and, of course, gin. This isn't just a workspace for concocting unique gin blends; it's also a presentation workshop where Kenny hosts his immersive gin experiences. Here, surrounded by the authentic elements of his craft, guests can explore the intricate processes and science behind gin-making, participate in hands-on activities, and gain a deeper appreciation for the art and chemistry of gin. It's a sensory journey that transforms the way people perceive and enjoy gin, all within the fascinating environment of the laboratory.

As you settle comfortably at the table, you're greeted with an intriguing gin creation sheet, reminiscent of a strategic game board, accompanied by 14 small bottles, a beaker, pipettes, syringes, and a sleek metal cup. It's like entering a gin alchemist's playground. Kenny, with his infectious enthusiasm, begins to explain the fascinating process ahead. He guides you through the steps of creating three gins, each uniquely tailored to your personal tastes. With a blend of science and artistry, you’ll measure, mix, and experiment with different botanical extracts and flavours each in their own individual bottles, transforming the seemingly ordinary into extraordinary concoctions.

At the Gin Laboratory, you're introduced to an array of base elements and flavour elements, each contributing to the intricate alchemy of gin creation. There’s 14 individually distilled botanicals. The base elements are categorised into three groups: Elements A, B, and C.

- **Elements A**: These combinations create Citrus and Spice profiles, perfect for those who enjoy vibrant, zesty flavours.

- **Elements B**: These elements combine to produce Spice and Herbal notes, ideal for crafting gins with a more aromatic, earthy character.

- **Elements C**: These mixtures result in Fruit and Spice sensations, catering to those who prefer a balanced blend of sweetness and warmth.

You’ll have the opportunity to experiment with a diverse array of flavours. Imagine incorporating the fiery kick of red chili, the floral notes of orris root, the comforting warmth of cinnamon quill, the tangy zest of grapefruit, the refreshing touch of lemongrass, and the exotic aroma of star anise, among others. It’s a playground for your palate, where you can mix and match these ingredients to create your own unique gin masterpieces.

Throughout the gin-making process, you’re encouraged to taste your creation every step of the way. This allows you to adjust the flavours to your liking. However, it’s a game of precision—once an element is added, you can’t take it away. This means you need to proceed with care, adding drops one by one. Some elements are particularly punchy, packing intense flavours that can dramatically alter your gin.

The careful balance of ingredients requires a mindful approach, where each addition is thoughtfully considered. The excitement builds as you fine-tune your creation, striving for that perfect blend. And the best part? Once you’re satisfied with your unique gin masterpiece, you get to savour and enjoy it. It’s a rewarding culmination of your hard work and experimentation, allowing you to truly appreciate the fruits of your labour.

We absolutely adored this experience and I wholeheartedly recommend it. It's a lot of fun, filled with laughter, and, of course, plenty of gin. It’s an immersive journey into the world of gin, where you become the creator of your own signature blends. This is the perfect experience for small groups of up to eight people—think hen parties, birthdays, or even as an unforgettable Christmas gift.

The intimate setting allows for personalised attention and a truly engaging experience. As you bond over the art of gin-making, you'll create lasting memories with friends or family. Plus, there's something special about crafting your own gin blends together.

Keep an eye out for exciting new developments from Kenny! He's working on a few innovative projects, including a Gin Creation At Home Kit, allowing you to bring the laboratory experience to your own home. Additionally, Kenny plans to take the Gin Laboratory on the road during the summer months, making it more accessible for everyone to enjoy this extraordinary journey into the world of gin.
