FOOD : Brewhemia - A Feast Fit for Royalty!

You cant miss Brewhemia. It stands proud and bright directly opposite the entrance exit to Waverley Station on Market Street in Edinburgh. This place is a unique beer palace that stands out as Scotland’s only one of its kind. The venue boasts 12 copper tanks filled with fantastic unpasteurised and unfiltered beers, which are genuinely as good as if you were drinking them right at the brewery.

Brewhemia sources beer directly from the Czech Republic and local Scottish master brewers. Beyond the brews, you can enjoy hearty seasonal dining, playful and unique beverages, and unforgettable moments of entertainment in their Beer Palace; from Oompa bands to choirs, drag to jazz - the entertainment is none stop, 7 days a week!

The menu features locally sourced Scottish produce, and the skilled bar staff dazzle with their mixology magic, offering top-tier beers, custom cocktails, vibrant spritzes, exquisite wines, and world-renowned gins and whiskies.

I’ve frequented Brewhemia several times, and each visit has been an enjoyable experience. During my most recent trip, I specifically went to savour their delightful Sunday Roast.

REVIEW OF BREWHEMIA EDINBURGH SUNDAY ROAST

Brewhemia is vast. There are 7 bars within 5 rooms across 2 floors. The Czech style Beer Palace (love this area), the Tap Room (which you enter through), the Prosecco Bar and Caffe (on this visit we were seated upstairs between the Prosecco Bar and the Beer Palace), the Boudoir and the Bothy.

Food at Brewhemia is a twist on Alpine dining, combining the hearty flavours of the mountains with culinary inspiration from the Alps. It’s a delightful fusion of Scottish produce and Alpine delights, resulting in unique and indulgent dishes. You’ll also notice the continued nod to Rabbie Burns throughout all the menus - Brewhemia is a celebration of Robert Burns’ legacy as explained below.

“Czech beer tanks, the incredible Bohemian people, amazing bierhalles in Germany, the cabaret & cocktails in Paris, the Prosecco parties and cafes in Italy and most of all; the heritage and flavours of his Scottish roots.

When he passed, Rabbie’s son vowed that he would enjoy the same experiences and pass them onto his son and so forth. The last great, great grandson listened hard and had the same burning desire and passion for all of these great things. In fact, he loves them so much he brought then altogether in an incredible and amazing mix, the most fantastic place with the spirit of old Rabbie, housed in the place where his great, great grandfather had worked so hard.”

The Sunday Roast is something I think Rabbie would approve of, especially the quantity!

Sunday Roast menu is 2 courses for £27pp and 3 courses for £33pp.

Starters include dishes like Rabbies Croquettes - haggis, neeps and tattie croquettes and Hummus with Greek flatbread. I’ve had both dishes before and they are superb!

For our Sunday Roast we chose the

Smoked Salmon - gin cured smoked salmon, charred orange and smoke oil and Bangers - German wurst bites with senf mustard and Brewhemia sauce.

The Gin-Cured Smoked Salmon combined the richness of salmon with the botanical notes of gin. The result was a silky texture with a very subtle juniper flavour which was soon replaced by citrus and then smoke.

The German wurst bites, offer a delightful medley of flavours. These bite-sized sausages were a combination of two German sausages, mildly spiced with robust flavours packed full of juicy, savoury, and meaty goodness. I loved the Senf - a must-dip that packs a punch!

On the Sunday Roast Menu, you have three side dishes to choose from: Kilted sausages, Sformato, and Cauliflower Cheese. Among them, the Cauli Cheese stands out as the most popular, and I’d gladly return just to savour just this dish.

This classic comfort food combined tender cauliflower florets with a rich, creamy cheese sauce. The cauliflower retained a slight bite, the cheese sauce was velvety and indulgent and the golden topping was slightly crispy adding texture and just elevating this dish to near perfection.

At Brewhemia, the main event promises a delightful culinary journey. Choose from three mouthwatering options: Roast Scottish Sirloin, Paprikash Chicken or Roast Porchetta. OR you can indulge in Rabbie’s Feast tucking into all 3 meats and eating like a King!

Each roast is served with roast potatoes, maple glazed root vegetables, seasonal greens and UNLIMITED Yorkshire Pudding and lashings of homemade gravy!

We decided to try one of each - a roast and a feast!

The Roast Scottish Sirloin was served well-done in three thin slices (my preference would be for one thicker slice), this sirloin comes with a generous Yorkshire Pudding perched on top. Accompanying vegetables include carrots, parsnips, and a mix of broccoli and green beans. The oven-roasted potatoes are flavourful, though not as crispy as desired.

For the ultimate indulgence, opt for Rabbie’s Feast. This massive plate featured three slices of Roast Sirloin, the roasted chicken breast, and a thick strip of porchetta (pork belly). The accompaniments remain consistent including the unlimited Yorkshire Pudding and lashings of homemade gravy.

The Paprikash Chicken was my favourite with flavours of sweet paprika and succulent chicken. The Porchetta was equally delectable with succulent, soft and sweet belly fat that melts in the mouth.

Whether you choose a single roast or the grand feast, just be warned—the portions are so generous that there’s no room left for dessert!

The Sunday Menu features Beer Palace Favourites, Sharing Platters, and sides, each priced individually (not included in the Sunday Roast cost). For Rabbie’s Feast, there’s an additional supplement of £7 per person.

Brewhemia buzzes with friendly service, generous portions, and delightful drinks. Whether it’s morning or evening, a Sunday Roast here is a must-try in Edinburgh!
