TARTANSPOON WEEKLY WRAP - NEWS FOR YOU TO DIGEST

FOOD

Barolo, Glasgow - Italian restaurant, Barolo, opened on Thursday following a stylish new look at its Mitchell Street site in Glasgow. The 150-capacity restaurant, which has been a staple of the Glasgow food scene for over half a century, has been transformed into a modern cosmopolitan restaurant and bar with all the essence of Italian glamour. Today, the effortless trendy restaurant and bar reopens following a complete refurbishment with a chic new look offering modern day Northern Italian fare in a Piedmont inspired setting. Barolo offers understated, classic Italian cooking alongside fine wines and signature cocktails with a menu that showcases a rich and savoury cuisine, matching with powerful, tannin-heavy Nebbiolo wines.

Four Seasons Hotel, St Filans - The “Seasons View” restaurant is working with Highland Wagyu Beef as one of the highlights of its participation in the Scottish Food and Drink Fortnight. Wagyu beef will now feature on their menu including Wagyu Burgers.

Sushi Samba - The latest branch of Sushi Samba will open in Edinburgh in 2022 when it takes up residence in the new St James development. It’s their 3rd UK restaurant and the 5th city in the world to host one of these amazing restaurants. I have dined at the Chicago restaurant and cant wait for it to open.

DRINKS

Lady of the Glen - A wonderful way to try a range of Lady of the Glen whiskies; their Select Miniature Set features five 5cl bottles of their single cask releases, chosen by them from their most recent outruns and beautifully packaged in a luxury gift box. Their Select Miniature Set is the perfect present for a whisky lover; whether for family, a friend, or even just as a treat for yourself; and is exclusively available on their website and priced at £45 including free UK delivery.

Highland Boundary - continue to celebrate Scotland food and drink with this incredible cocktail.

  • Highland Boundary Birch and Elderflower (25mls)

  • Calvados/Apple Brandy (10mls)

  • Cloudy Apple Juice (150mls)

  • Mint sprig or slice of apple

The apple martini or Appletini brings fresh, fruity flavours to a smooth drink.  In a cocktail mixer add some ice and pour in the Birch and Elderflower together with the Calvados.  Stir and add the cloudy apple juice.  Shake and strain out the ice whilst pouring into a martini glass.  Garnish with a sprig of mint or a slice of apple.

Jura Sunset - You can win all the ingredients to make a Jura Sunsert including the Jura whisky and Aperol Spritz. All the info is available here

TRAVEL/EVENTS

Harrison Hotel, Belfast - New boutique hotel, The Harrison Chambers of Distinction, opens this week in Belfast. Having historically hosted scoundrels and scholars since 1879, this bohemian bolthole will appeal to the culturally curious traveller and those looking to add a little more sass to their staycation. Everything about The Harrison, as often referred,  celebrates what is great about Belfast - carpets from the makers of the ill-fated Titanic's floorings, railings from the Ebrington Barracks dating to 1840 and floorboards from the nearby Royal Victoria hospital. Selected wallpapers have been hand-designed by local designer Grainne Maher.

Edinburgh Craft Beer Festival - The Edinburgh Craft Beer Festival is going ahead this year at a new outdoor venue: Outside @ The Corn Exchange. Adhering to Scottish government guidelines, the organisers We Are Beer made the decision to move the festival from its original home at The Biscuit Factory to The Corn Exchange’s outside area to ensure a safe, socially distanced festival. The line up is looking good with plenty of Scottish breweries (Fierce Beer, 71 Brewing and Newbarns to name a few). Beers from some of the world’s most cutting-edge breweries will be shipped over by brewers unable to travel abroad including Equilibrium (NYC). Bross Bagels and Harajuku have been confirmed, offering tasty treats with more to be announced. Keep a look out on my Instagram, as I’ll be giving away a set of tickets to this event.

That’s all for this week folks.
