STAY : Hotel Indigo, Dundee
Let’s visit the lovely and often very sunny City of Dundee. Dundee, often referred to as the “City of Discovery,” is renowned for its rich maritime history, scientific innovation, and vibrant cultural scene. It’s also the UK’s first UNESCO City of Design!
Today, Dundee is celebrated for its contributions to the digital entertainment industry, particularly in video game development, notably Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings. The city is also home to the V&A Dundee, Scotland’s first design museum, which showcases its strong design heritage. Additionally, Dundee’s waterfront, with the RRS Discovery ship, highlights its significant role in Antarctic exploration led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton, which aimed to explore the uncharted territories of Antarctica.
This blend of historical significance and modern innovation makes Dundee a unique and dynamic city but did you know that it’s also the home of the Beano - remember Dennis the Menace, Gnasher, and Minnie the Minx?? and its played an important role in the manufacture of denim fabric?? PLUS its the home of downright delicious Dundee Marmalade and Dundee Cake (a traditional Scottish fruit cake made with sultanas, currants, and almonds) with the Forfar Bridie (a savoury meat pastry) and the Arbroath Smokie (smoked haddock from the nearby town of Arbroath) also popular savoury dishes in the region.
But what’s this all got to do with Hotel Indigo you might ask?! Well, its one hotel in Dundee that you need to stay at whilst you’re out exploring the city.
Hotel Indigo is a unique blend of historical charm and modern luxury, nestled in the heart of Dundee’s rich industrial past. Housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century textile mill, the hotel reflects the city’s heritage with its bold design, featuring bare-brick walls and hardwood timber floors. Located near Dundee’s city centre and waterfront, it offers easy access to attractions like the V&A Dundee and Discovery Point. Guests can enjoy Scottish cuisine at the Daisy Tasker restaurant, unwind with a drink at the Eighteen22 bar, and relax in rooms that combine contemporary comforts with historical touches.
I stayed over in one of their Junior Suites, the Tay Bridge.
The Junior Suites offer a spacious and stylish retreat, perfect for those seeking a blend of comfort and elegance. The suite features a king-sized bed with plush linens, a separate seating area with contemporary furnishings, and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. The decor combines modern design elements with nods to Dundee’s industrial heritage, including exposed brick walls and unique artwork. Guests can enjoy amenities such as a flat-screen TV, complimentary Wi-Fi, a Nespresso coffee machine, and a luxurious bathroom with a rainfall shower and premium toiletries.
Additional touches include a gorgeous red telephone for internal and external calls, treats like shortbread and Tunnocks Caramel Wafers in the fridge, hairdryer, a copy of the Beano comic, a safe and, ironing board and iron.
I was thoroughly impressed by the room’s modern attention to detail. Guest comfort and convenience are clearly prioritised, with USB ports and plugs conveniently placed on either side of the bed. The TV is mounted on a swivel arm, allowing you to watch from either the bed or the seating area. The door lock features both a chain and an additional push button for extra security. Plus, the shower taps are thoughtfully positioned away from the shower head, so you can avoid the awkward dance of turning them on before stepping in.
The bathroom is incredibly inviting, featuring a large tub and a rainfall shower, making it hard to decide which to use first. The room itself is spacious and filled with natural light, complemented by big, fluffy white towels and luxurious toiletries. The water pressure is excellent, creating a perfect environment to either start your day or unwind after a long one.
Daisy Tasker, located within the hotel, is a charming Scottish bistro that pays homage to its namesake, a beloved mill worker known for organising social activities for her fellow weavers. The restaurant celebrates Scotland’s rich culinary heritage by featuring locally sourced ingredients and traditional dishes with a modern twist. Guests can enjoy a variety of dining experiences, from a hearty Scottish breakfast to a delightful Sunday lunch. The warm and inviting atmosphere, combined with a menu that highlights the best of local produce, makes for a wonderful dining experience.
The staff at this establishment are exceptional in every way. From the meticulous house-keeping team to the welcoming receptionists, and from the attentive bar staff to the knowledgeable restaurant servers, everyone goes above and beyond to ensure a pleasant experience. Their friendliness and expertise shine through in every interaction, making guests feel truly valued. No request is too much trouble for them, as they are always ready to assist with a smile. Their dedication to providing top-notch service is evident, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for all who visit.
