REVIEW : Sodastream, sparkling water makers

If there’s one inanimate object I’ve fallen in love with it’s my Sodastream. Never have I used a piece of kit SO much!

It’s a wee kitchen miracle each time I turn the good ol Coonsil Juice into Sparkling Water and I love it. Sodastream allows you to control your fizz game, from slightly bubbly to super intense with 2 second splurts of pushing the button.

REVIEW : SODASTREAM, SPARKLING WATER

Plus the biggest bonus about owning a Sodastream is that I have given up my shares in local Supermarkets 2L sparkling water bottles and I no longer contribute a serious amount of plastic bottles to this planet.

I try my best, like many of us, to cut down on plastic waste. I love brands that are doing what they can for the environment like Sea Change Wine who’ve removed the unnecessary plastic wrap around the cork, use renewable plant-based closures and the paper for the labels comes from certified sustainable forests and made partially from grape waste, plus they make a donation to marine charities from every bottle sold. AND Mossgiel Farm Milk, who are fully organic and have reusable packaging - glass bottles, reusable tubs or churns.

I feel like I’ve made a massive impact on my weekly waste reduction. I use to throw out at least 6 x 2L bottles of plastic a week (plus the plastic wrapping around the multipack) and although much of it was recyclable, I still felt terribly guilty at adding to the worlds plastic problem. With one Sodastream reusable bottle I can save between 300-400 disposable 2L bottles every year and for me that’s massive.

Here are some astounding plastic bottle stats:

  • We consume 1 million plastic bottles every minute worldwide

  • Globally, people go through roughly 200 billion plastic water bottles annually

  • Bottles used to package water take over 1,000 years to biodegrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes

  • There are 5 trillion pieces of plastic afloat in the world’s oceans

  • 1 million sea birds and marine mammals are killed every year by the plastic floating in the oceans

  • Also, it takes more than 450 years for one plastic bottle to decompose in a landfill

It’s a shocking read and sometimes it’s easier to just forget. I do think it’s important to do what YOU can to help the planet but much of that is determined by our household budget - often to be ecological or environmentally friendly costs more.

Sodastream isn’t the best choice economically. I use approx 625 litres a year which means that I will need about 10 refill cylinders at a cost of approx £15 each, plus the cost of the machine, £99.99. This works out over the course of a year, that a litre of sparkling water from a Sodastream will cost me £0.40p but purchased in a multipack from a supermarket, will cost me £0.18p. Year 2, all going well and if the machine doesn’t need replaced, the cost of a sodastream litre drops to £0.24p.

For me the ease of having sparkling water constantly at my fingertips, not having to lug the weekly shop of 6 x 2L bottles of water up two flights of stairs and the environmental impact of reducing plastic usage, means more to me than saving £130 per year and I am fortunate enough to be able to afford it!

Remember, Bottled Water companies don’t make water, they sell plastic bottles! So if you can swop to making your own sparkling water and cutting down on plastic, then give it a go!

I’m off to make a bottle and give my Sodastream a hug.
