REVIEW : Sheep Heid Inn Festive Menu

The Sheep Heid Inn is the sister to Salisbury Arms in Edinburgh. Both buildings are grand, exuding charm and character and are perfect venues for Christmas.

We headed along to the Sheep Heid Inn to try out their Festive Menus and there is alot on offer.

They have 3 menus available.

  • Three course Classic Festive Menu, with a choice of seasonal favourites for £26.95

  • Four course Indulgent Festive Menu, with a glass of Prosecco on arrival, a choice of premium dishes and luxury chocolate truffles to finish for £33.95

  • For an extra £15 upgrade to our five course Extra Special Festive Menu, with a glass of Moёt & Chandon Champagne on arrival, rustic breads and olives, a choice of premium dishes and a cocktail of choice**

On arrival we sipped on some Italian Rose Freixenet Sparkling Wine and had a wander around this wonderfully restored pub, bar and restaurant. It is one of Edinburgh’s oldest pubs!

The decor says it all. Beautifully decorated with festive touches that aren’t over the top!

The tables were all set, the candles lit and we couldn’t wait to tuck into some delicious food on the menus.

We started off with some canapes. The canapes are reserved for those that are booking the function room for their Christmas parties or events, but we were lucky enough to try some.

SHEEP HEID INN FESTIVE MENU REVIEW

From the Classic Menu we ordered our starters.

Seared Scallops with crisp pancetta and minted pea puree - the scallops were large and cooked perfectly. We loved the minted pea puree where neither flavour overpowered, it was just well balanced.

Deep fried Brie in panko breadcrumbs with a spiced fruit and sloe gin chutney (v) - the crust was firm and crunchy but inside is where the magic lay. It was filled with hot melted gooey brie that just oozed out over the salad. We scooped up every last morsel of this.

The mains dishes feature on all the menus but there is a surcharge if you order the steak.

10OZ Rib-Eye Steak served with twice-cooked chunky chips, roasted mushroom, confit tomato and parsley butter - expect a massive portion here. The steak is juicy and well cooked and we loved the butter melting over the seared steak. Chips were chunky, hot and fluffy and the tomato and mushroom ideal sides for this dish.

Maple Pork Belly and pig cheek on Dijon chive mash, cavolo nero, crisp prosciutto and a red wine and sage jus - this dish made our mouth water from start to finish. The pork belly wasn’t too fatty and fell apart. The pig cheek was succulent and well seasoned. We’re not a fan of Cavolo Nero but heartily tucked into the mash.

Caramel Creme Brulee served with home-baked sultana & oatmeal biscuits (v) - the top was well caramelised and cracked like a pro when tapped with the spoon revealing the very smooth vanilla set custard underneath. The biscuits were a nice touch. This was from the classic menu.

White Chocolate and Hazelnut praline tart with caramelised pears, Belgian chocolate sauce and Bourbon vanilla ice cream (v) - the prettiest dish by far. The pears could have done with more time being caramelised but they were still soft and easy to eat. The praline tart was stunning and we could easily have eaten this all over again. This dessert is on the indulgent menu.

A massive thumbs up for this Festive Menu. They’ve taken dishes that we all love and elevated them slightly without making them pretentious and Christmas staples are still included like Roast Turkey but it comes with clementine stuffing and the sound of the honey mustard duvet is right up our street.

Christmas pudding is on the menu and you’ll also find Duck and Salmon there too. Plenty of choice.

They cater for vegetarians and vegans - just let them know in advance.

We loved our visit to the Sheep Heid Inn and highly recommend you try here for your Christmas lunch or dinner.

The Sheep Heid Inn is open until Christmas Eve when they are open midday to 11pm.
