REVIEW : EAT - Oakingham Belle, Wokingham, England
Theres a purpose built pub that’s opened up on a new housing estate in Wokingham, Berkshire, very new to the area having only been opened for less than two months.
The reviews online are favourable, so TartanSpoonie, Kim went along to find out more.
Review Oakingham Belle in Wokingham, England
Oakingham Belle is a lovely stand along pub with ample grounds surrounding it. The pub is cosy but spacious at the same time and you will receive a very warm welcome on arrival.
The decor is country pub style, with lush fabrics, leather and wood used throughout. It has a very traditional dining pub feel to it.
What I did love about Oakingham Belle, is that it is dog friendly. It’s not just dog friendly with a bowl of water available for your pooch, they have a dedicated dog friendly section of the restaurant where tables are raised to allow your dog to rest comfortably under the table. There’s also blankets available for your best friend too. Awwwww.
The food is typical pub chain food - there is nothing out of the ordinary here but the comfort is that you know what you’re ordering and you know what you’ll get. The food is cooked well, well seasoned, hot and tasty and for the price point, it's spot on.
They serve a range of pub grub - burgers, fish n chips, scampi, steaks and gammon steaks.
They also have a good selection of gins and a very decent cocktail menu.
Starters - Cheesy Garlic Ciabatta (£2.00).
Can we have some ciabatta with our bread. This garlic bread was loaded with garlic and cheese, crispy and good. No vampires visited that night!
Starters - Beer battered onion rings (£3.00)
I loved the crunchy gnarly bits on the onion rings. They were super crunchy but still retained their soft silkiness of the onion in the centre.
Starter - Chicken Wings coated in your choice of Korean-style BBQ sauce or fruity chilli sauce, we chose the BBQ sauce (£5.75)
A nice portion size for a starter plate. They were sticky and smothered in sauce. Very tasty indeed.
Chicken Schnitzel Burger served with chunky chips and coleslaw (£12.00)
This was massive and I never managed to finish it. Two large chicken fillets in a very crunchy crumb, smothered in cheese topped with this tiny teeny wee bun! Chips were great
Steak and Ale Pie flavoured with cheddar cheese and served with mash, seasonal vegetables and gravy (£10.75)
This was the star dish of the night. The pie was a proper pie, not a pot pie in sight. The pastry was short and crumbly but not too thick, the filling was full of steak and super tasty. Veg retained a slight crunch.
Baked Cookie Dough studded with milk chocolate chunks, topped with chocolate sauce and vanilla pod ice cream (£4.75)
Who would have thought cookie dough could taste this delicious. The combination of cookie dough, chocolate and ice cream is a winner - nothing not to like here.
House Sundae with meringue, whipped cream, mixed berries and strawberry ice cream (£4.75)
Strangely, I thought this could have done with being sweeter. The meringue was sweet but there wasn’t much of it, the berries quite tart, the whipped cream fairly standard and the strawberry flavoured ice cream only had a hint of strawberry.
Oakingham Belle has a superb beer garden and outdoor seating area, they have good disabled access, free wifi with good parking. They cater for vegetarians and have a dedicated gluten free menu. Ticks just about every box.
I thought the prices were very cheap for the portion sizes. The food was good and tasty and the service, albeit it slow in places was fine. Our waiter, Steve was super friendly and attentive when possible.
I liked it and think that you will too.
