REVIEW : EAT - Urban Fox, Edinburgh

Sometimes it’s the little changes that make the greatest impact. Urban Fox announced that they were doing a refurb prior to their re-opening and I can confirm that it’s pretty darn gorgeous.

A dark blueish black colour scheme with wonderfully vibrant jungle print material on seating backs. Their tables and chairs are more spaced out for easy social distancing, some outdoor seating is now available and a separate entrance and exit (although I did manage to enter through the exit door! Covid Fail Adele!)

The staff all wear masks, the tables and seats are sanitised after each guest visit. I love that the staff offer you a shot of hand sanitiser as soon as you sit down all in the same sentence when asking for your drinks order. I did feel safe and other diners adhered to the social distancing guidelines.

REVIEW - DINNER AT URBAN FOX, EDINBURGH

I couldn’t quite place their menu, its a little bit of Scottish with an Asian twist. It features sharing plates, wagyu beef burgers, fish n chips, bao buns and tacos.

Small plates washed down with ice cold beers is definitely the way to eat when catching up with friends.

Halloumi Fries with Salsa both got a nod from us, and we both agreed on the Battered Prawns with Sweet Chilli Sauce and the Battered Cauliflower.

The prawns disappeared as soon as the dish was set down; decent sized prawns in a crispy well seasoned batter. Halloumi fries were large and squeaky although I would have preferred the salsa on the side and not over the top - it was a little too tangy and tart for me. Cauliflower was delicious and retained some bite.

A nice selection of finger food!

For main, our server suggested the Korean Chicken Bao Bun. I’m not a fan of bao buns, they are just too doughy for me, but Clare enjoyed them. They did look slightly unappetising when they arrived with the paleness of the bun only enhanced against the white plate. The splash of bright purple pickled veg on the side did go some way to helping this dish look like it was something worth eating.

However, looks are deceiving and they were super tasty. The chicken was juicy and the batter had a slight spice to it.

The other main dish was the Fox Burger and I wish our server had informed me of the super size this burger packs! Although expertly described on the menu - 2 wagyu beef burgers, bacon and cheese, this is a whopper!

No way I was getting my chops around this so I had to split it in two. Burgers are huge, juicy and well seasoned; and they held together well. So much to get through; it should come with a warning to only eat if you are HUNGRY!

We couldn’t resist some sides too and the onion rings and sweet potato fries filled up the empty space on the table. I’d recommend you order fries if you order the bao buns. Perfectly cooked, crunchy and crispy in all the right places.

Urban Fox is back with good food at good prices. They are definitely a great neighbourhood restaurant with a very laid back easy going vibe. We left with very full tummies and happy that a sense of normal life had returned. Urban Fox is an ideal spot to catch up with a mate or a few friends.

My Spoon Award : Silver Spoon 8/10

I was invited by Urban Fox to review their menu. Food and drink were complimentary but the views are very much my own.
