Pizza time! Decision time on where to go. I wanted to try somewhere I hadn’t been before so we whittled it down to Civerinos.
Friday night and we hadn’t booked but as it was 8pm that we were aiming to dine, we thought we’d give it a go and have a fair to good chance of getting a table. Civerinos were busy but were able to accommodate us – thank you!
Civerinos has a good rep on social media and lots of great pics of their food on Instagram etc so this was our choice.
Situated smack bang in the middle of Edinburgh, this pizza place is sited in Hunters Square. Lovely outdoor eating area and its communal eating inside with long large tables and pews.
The interior is young, hip and funky and I have to say the staff are brilliant. Attentive, friendly, great banter and nothing is a hassle. The food is served on paper plates and take-away containers. No cleaning up required! Love it.
Onto the food. I had high hopes. I ordered the Arancini (deep fried risotto balls stuffed with mozzarella and served with the ragu sauce) and Kim ordered the calamari (semolina coated fresh Scottish squid); and I’m sorry to say but the Arancini was still frozen in the middle so it was sent back. They were very gracious about it, delivering another to my table asap and removing the cost of it from the bill. The calamari was ok, slightly rubbery and a little bland. I don’t mind having to season my own food but then at least have the condiments available on your table if this is your intention.
Next up was the meatball pizza (chianina italian beef meatballs with a tomato and porcini ragu) . This has the wow factor. Delivered piping hot to our table, the cheese all bubbled up, the meatballs sizzling and the edge of the crust crispy.
The pizza was good. The sourdough was cooked to perfection. Very thin, crispy and tasty with no soggy bottom in sight! My only comment again was the lack of seasoning and for this reason we had to sprinkle a rather lot of parmesan cheese on it. BUT it disappeared rather quickly and we both left with pizza bellies!
I feel bad for not giving this place a raving review as it has a great reputation. It DOES do great pizza. It DOES have great staff. It DOES have a great feel to it. I just think they might have been having a bit of an off moment. I will definitely be back.
