Hamad International Airport located in Doha is the home of Qatar Airways. The airport is a world-class facility, where the concept of hospitality underpins everything.
It is evident in the 138 extra wide check-in counters, the high-speed security clearance and the abundance of service desks.
You’ll experience luxury and space, sophistication and elegance. High ceilings and expansive concourses give a sense of grandeur with designer touches and amazing art installations – including the yellow teddy bear!
Hamad International is a hub and there are 25 airlines currently serving its base. We were on route to Phuket, Thailand and flying from Edinburgh this seemed the most direct and easiest route to fly.
We left Edinburgh at 3:40pm on a Sunday and arrived in Doha just after 12 midnight leaving us with just over a seven hour layover in the airport, to depart for Phuket at 8:30am. There is much to do in the airport; there are quiet lounges, cinema spaces, areas for you to work from, cafes, gyms, spas, shopping etc. but we decided to book into the Oryx Hotel which is on the transit side of the airport; and I am so glad we did.
Once off the plane, we you go through a security check even although you are remaining in transit; look for the big yellow teddy bear art installation and just beyond that is The Oryx Hotel reception.
The check-in was simple, smooth and quick; and before we knew it, our key card was in our hand and we were making our way along the very long corridor to our room. I think the walk to our room took longer than the check-in, but that could just have been the fatigue kicking in.
The room is clean, smart and provides all the amenities required. After an 8 hour flight, a soft bed and shower are most welcome. There is a large screen TV, coffee machine and nice bathroom facilities. It’s also remarkably quiet for being in the centre of the terminal. The windows overlook the yellow teddy bear and concourse but you’d never know. The bed is king size and really comfortable.
One thing I did appreciate the most was that reception are aware of your connecting flight times and will phone you in the morning, giving you sufficient time to pack, check-out and make your way to your gate in good time.
The bathroom is very spacious with his and her sinks, a large walk in shower and his and her toilets. Full toiletries are supplied including disposable toothbrushes and toothpaste.
Up at 6:45am. Check out was swift, all done within two minutes and we were on our way to catch our connecting flight to Phuket.
Would I stay here again? Yes.
The hotel is expensive but you are paying for the privilege of sleep within a busy airport whether that be for 4 hours or 10 hours and for the convenience. Definitely worth it!
