It’s a family restaurant and a 6pm on a Friday it’s busy with families, many with young children and groups of people. As the evening passes, the place gets busier and the nose level goes up a notch or two, but you don’t mind. It’s all jovial and everyone seems happy stuffing their faces with pizzas and pastas.
A wee casual, informal family get-together and Tony Macaroni’s is the chosen place.
The restaurant is large with a very long communal table down the centre of one half of the restaurant (it must easily sit 30 people) and the rest of the seating is booths.
Service is quick and attentive. Menus are ginormous and the choice a little overwhelming so it was a process of elimination that allowed us to eventually choose something off the menu.
We wanted garlic. Yes. We wanted cheese. Yes.
Starters – garlic bread and cheesy garlic bread. It doesn’t get much simpler than that although on their menu its listed as Bruschetta Aglio e Burro – Toasted bread smothered with garlic butter. Bruschetta Aglio, Burro e Mozzarella – Toasted bread smothered with garlic butter, topped with mozzarella cheese
TartanSpoonie Carmin is a pasta fiend, and loves mac n cheese so it was Tony’s Mac n Cheese on order. Again a simple easy choice and then it was pizza for the other two of us.
Mine was the Parma – Tomato sauce, mozzarella, Parma ham, chopped rocket, grated parmesan and balsamic vinegar reduction.
The other was Toto – Tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, chicken and Italian sausage.
Pizza’s were good. Thin crust, bubbled and charred on the edges smothered in toppings and cheese. The toppings aren’t too thickly spread over the pizza, so it doesn’t go soggy. There is a lot of pizza but like most pizzas, your eyes are always bigger than your belly but you find a way to make it all go in anyway.
I tasted the mac n cheese and it just didn’t do it for me. It was a bowl of pasta with a cheese sauce and every spoonful tasted the same. It was bland and one dimensional, lacking flavour and any eat-me call to action; however Carmin enjoyed it and I would take her word over mine in this instance. (I am not a massive mac n cheese fan!)
Dinner at Tony Macaroni comes at you at a speed and it’s pretty darn tasty too. Definitely fast food with a smile!
