PRODUCT : Cumberland Saucy Gin

As you know gin is very popular in Scotland but it is being sold elsewhere too. What can we say – people love gin and they love Scottish gin.

There are companies all over the UK selling the good stuff and Chestnut House is no exception. They have recently started selling their Cumberland Saucy Gin which is proving very very popular and they sent me a wee sample to taste.

This gin is distilled in Scotland but sold from a wee shop and off-licence in Pooley Bridge, Cumbria called Chestnut House. They opened in May 2016 and mainly sell local gins and spirits. In the past two years they have specialised in food and drink, but with a strong emphasis on gin (they stock over 400 gins!).

Cumberland Saucy Gin is inspired by the traditional recipe for Cumberland sauce, which includes ingredients such as orange, lemon, redcurrants, mustard and ginger.

TO TASTE : It’s a very pleasant drinking gin and you will most certainly pick up the redcurrants and the orange peel. It comes with a wee spicy hit at the end where you can taste the mustard, coriander, juniper and pepper. It’s very warming.

ON THE NOSE : It’s fruity and I instantly picked up the citrus.

TO GARNISH : Andrew, the owner recommends a slither of orange peel but I felt it didn’t need it. There was ample citrus in there to enjoy it without anything additional. I paired it with a premium tonic water from Fever Tree.

Cumberland Saucy Gin, 70cl is available online here and costs £34.95. It’s a nice addition to my gin collection.

Having a look on their website they also stock the most phenomenal amount of gin related food including Gin Cheese, Gin Jam, Gin Sweets, Gin Marmalade (I’d like to try this for sure) and Gin Chocolate (Gin and Tonic chocolate from Coco Chocolatier in Edinburgh) as well as Gin related items such as Gin glasses, stones, baubles and crackers.

Chestnut House off licence and village store is seemingly quite famous in the Lake District and I’ve added to my list of must-visits!
