NEWS : Edinburgh Whisky Academy launches NEW GIN DIPLOMA

In response to increasing demand and interest, we are very pleased to announce the arrival of our new and unique SQA-awarded Gin Diploma, which is believed to be the world’s first Gin Diploma. It launches on 19th April with the first course taking place at the SMWS Vaults in Leith.

Delivered by industry stalwart Geraldine Coates, the course offers an educational, engaging and interactive journey into the wonderful world of gin. Each course will also feature expert knowledge from a guest gin distiller who will share practical details on specific distillation methods and how they extract the flavour from their chosen botanicals.

The Diploma is SQA awarded and as such will be formally assessed.

The Diploma includes six modules covering the History of Gin, Gin Renaissance, Definition of Gin, Distillation, Sensory and Cocktails.

Whether you are new to gin, a gin lover or work in the spirits or hospitality industry, this fun and immersive course offers something for everyone.

As part of the plan to introduce new courses and experiences to the Academy, we are launching a half day workshop at the Secret Herb Garden, for those keen to understand the role and impact of botanicals, particularly with regards to gin making. This exclusive workshop is run by Hamish Martin, owner of the Secret Herb Garden, and includes a tour of the Garden which is home to over 1000 juniper plants and over 40 other gin botanical plants not to mention the flower garden, many of which are used in floral gins.

This workshop is an amazing opportunity to see, feel and understand botanicals in their natural form and to learn about their different medicinal, culinary and decorative attributes. It is a morning to completely submerge yourself in the most important ingredients of gin….the plants themselves.

Hamish is considered ‘the botanical expert’ and has been consulted by numerous gin distilleries in creating their product range. He also teaches modules for the Royal Botanical Gardens for students on their Diploma.

Hamish has devised this workshop in partnership with the Edinburgh Whisky Academy, to offer a comprehensive and interactive morning, which will enable you to understand how individual botanicals behave and how to blend base botanicals with single plant distillate to create magic. There is also the opportunity for some all important tasting!

The first workshop will be on Friday 20th April. Transport will leave central Edinburgh at 09:00 and return at 14:00; the trip will include lunch.
