A Review of Loudons Cafe & Bakery

Opening quote from Loudons website : ‘peaceful spacious surroundings in our centrally located cafe’. Spot on! Loudons is a large open plan cafe with mixed seating areas – some with comfy sofas, some with large communal like solid tables and chairs and some with two seater tables and chairs. It has everything you want a local cafe to have – free wi-fi, newspapers, generous space between the tables, child friendly and light. There is a lot of light from the large floor to ceiling windows that run the length of the front of the building.

Loudons may be an oasis in the middle of the city hustle and bustle but it certainly isn’t a quiet place, as in it’s ALWAYS busy. I’ve been a few times to Loudons and this time I had to queue (it was during the Festival!)

They do a full and very varied breakfast menu featuring various dishes using egg, blackpudding, haggis, salmon, chorizo, porridge and pancakes but I usually make it here for lunch. They are quite focused on providing many gluten free and vegetarian dishes, so you’ll find these dishes integrated into the menu rather than being on a separate one. They also do great coffees and a superb pot of tea!

On the lunch menu you’ll find burgers, super salads and pizzas, quiches and soups all on the Chefs Special Boards! The image above was a Chilli Butterbean Soup that I had on a previous visit. Service is good. Super efficient and friendly but they leave you pretty much to get on with your chat without forgetting about you.

My dining partner decided to have the Chicken and Bacon Burger which is served with potato wedges, dipping sauce and a sesame coleslaw. The burger bun was soft and the chicken well cooked and seasoned. The wedges were well cooked with just enough bite to make you wanting to eat more.

I went for the Benny Hoots Mon which is haggis, blackpudding and bacon topped with poached eggs and tomato ketchup. My eggs were poached to perfection. Cooked whites and a runny yolk, just how I like it.

A fabulous Scottish combination with the homemade tomato ketchup adding the tang which brought this entire dish together. Delicious!

Check out my egg yolk video here.

Loudons is consistantly good. I’ve only ever visited week days but can see why this place would get pretty rammed at weekends. I haven’t managed any of their cakes and sweet treats that they bake on site yet, I’ll leave that for another day mid winter when I’m in need of cheering up.
