I first became aware of Breadwinner Bakery in January when they kindly sent me a huge parcel of some of their products to try in time for Burns Night. This included their Haggis and Sweet Potato Stromboli which was outstanding. You can read my full review here.

The Breadwinner bakery Edinburgh was founded by Master Baker Sean McVey and his wife, Lesley McVey and they opened their first bakery in Bruntsfield Place on the 6th October 1973. It was the finest and first open plan bakery in Edinburgh, they wanted to have nothing hidden from you. Almost four decades later they are still committed to customer service and providing excellent products using traditional craftsman techniques and high-quality ingredients.

I went along to the Breadwinner bakery to meet Sean and what a fascinating tale he has to tell and what an inspiration. Sean has over 50 years baking experience and now heads up their team of master bakers and apprentices. You can always find him in the bakery covered in flour!

Breadwinner Bakery are dedicated to tradition and use local ingredients which enables them to deliver the best most wholesome, flavourful, natural fresh bread in Edinburgh.

They use traditional, simple methods and allow time to naturally enhance their products, rather than adding anything that would change the quality or flavour of their breads. Additionally, as far as it is possible to ascertain, all their products are free from genetic modification and they do not use any animal fats in the baking of their breads, rolls and cakes.  They use the freshest possible ingredients and source these from local suppliers -some of their flour comes from a farm near Haddington in East Lothian.

I truly love Breadwinner Bakery breads and you can purchase them from many Scotmid Stores across the city. Here is a list of stockists.

What I love especially about Breadwinner Bakery is their sense of community and what they give back. They are very involved with schools and Sean often works closely with local schools teaching our young about bread making; and they also run Bread Making Masterclasses for all us wannabe bakers. Keep a look out on their Facebook page for more information on classes.

You’ll find more information about Breadwinner Bakery and their large delicious product range on their website.

Enjoy your bread everyone.
