It was Christmas Eve and all the lights were twinkling. The night was cold and crisp and Stockbridge was looking particularly lovely or was it just the fact that Christmas brings with it just a wee touch of magic.
We were looking for somewhere close to home, within walking distance; somewhere warm and cosy that served ice cold cider and a hearty meal. And so to Hectors we headed.
Hectors is always buzzing. It has a wonderful laid back, relaxed easy atmosphere. An ideal spot on a Sunday for a large full Scottish breakfast, sipping copious cups of coffee and reading the papers.
We sat at a table at the back near the fire and ordered some super ice cold Kopperberg ciders. Why does ice cold drink and food always taste great when its cold outside?? The menu offers a range of dishes from seafood to venison and great pub favourites like Fish ‘n Chips, and Beef ‘n Ale pie.
We ordered the Classic Cheese Burger & Chips and the Chicken & Chips.
Kim had the Burger which was large, juicy and cooked well. Had a good sear on it and well seasoned. Plenty of melted cheese, lettuce and tomato served with an interesting yet quite yummy sauce. We tried to figure out what the sauce was but she just ate it instead! Chips were great.
I ordered the Chicken and Chips. A total surprise – it was outstanding. The half chicken was well cooked, fresh and seasoned well. It was soft and succulent and fell off the bone.
The rosemary chips were fabulous but it was the gravy that I could have just drank on its own. Not sure what was in the gravy – perhaps bone marrow and a very hearty beef stock?? It was incredible and when I go to Hectors again, no matter what I order, I’ll be asking for a pint of this gravy on the side.
Our waitress was brilliant too. The restaurant got very busy within an hour of us arriving and soon she was waiting on up to 8 tables or so. She handled it with ease. Super friendly and very helpful. 10/10 for service.
I’m a fan of Hectors having had a few Sunday breakfasts here. Get yourself along, its perfect for lunch with friends, dinner with your partner, a few pints or Sunday breakfast.
